I apologize to everyone as I just… ran out of mental coaxium and never got around to doing proper infographics for this survey or detailed breakdown. That being said, here are the autogenerated reports and the first page of proper infographics that I did before the winter break ended and I lost all semblance of free time.
This first chart was an attempt to show the approximate amount of people who got to the survey from various routes vs. how many of them take part in various X-Wing communities. The width of the color block shows how many people specifically came upon the survey from that place and the height is how many people partake in that place total. So for example, 354 people, or 33.9% of survey takers came specifically from Reddit, and 537 people total visit that place.
For ease of viewing, here is a text breakdown:
no | Place | How many people found the survey here % | # of people who found the survey here | # of people who are members of this community |
1 | The X-Wing TMG Subreddit | 33.9% | 354 people | 537 people |
2 | A Local Group’s Social Media (any) | 15.3% | 160 people | 534 people |
3 | Word of Mouth | 12.7% | 133 people | N/A |
4 | X-Wing Miniatures Community Group on Facebook | 11.5% | 120 people | 418 people |
5 | X-Wing Second Edition Discord Server | 5.9% | 243 people | 243 people |
6 | Sith Takers Discord | 5.1% | 53 people | 141 people |
7 | Star Wars X-Wing UK, IRL and Beyond! Facebook page | 4.9% | 51 people | 201 people |
8 | X-Wing Legacy (2.0) Server | 3.6% | 38 people | 144 people |
9 | Gold Squadron Podcast Discord/Podcast | 2.9% | 30 people | 416 people |
10 | Team Junkyard’s Discord Server | 1.4% | 15 people | 71 people |
11 | Atomic Mass Games social media (combined) | 1.3% | 13 people | 272 people |
As always I ask what people’s primary and secondary factions are, they provide a baseline from survey to survey to see what is popular and what is not. They also allow for some interesting cross sectional analysis, like do CIS players even care about getting more ships when they have UNLIMITED CLANKAS?
Faction | Primary % | # of people as Primary | Secondary % | # of people as Secondary |
Galactic Republic | 8.7% | 91 people | 10.5% | 110 people |
CIS (Separatists) | 6.1% | 64 people | 5.9% | 62 people |
Scum & Villainy | 15.9% | 166 people | 13.3% | 139 people |
Galactic Empire | 24.7% | 258 people | 17.9% | 187 people |
Rebel Alliance | 24.0% | 251 people | 19.3% | 201 people |
First Order | 7.5% | 78 people | 9.5% | 99 people |
Resistance | 5.5% | 57 people | 9.2% | 96 people |
Cannot Decide | 7.6% | 79 people | 14.4% | 150 people |
This next chart talks about completing your collection for a faction. We defined this as getting at least one copy of every single ship in a faction (excluding epic ships) Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire are the favorites, as ever, which makes sense, both are in the core set, have a ton of ships and have new faction starter sets.
Galactic Republic | CIS (Separatists) | Scum & Villainy | Galactic Empire | Rebel Alliance | First Order | Resistance | N/A |
47.5% | 38.3% | 50.2% | 56.8% | 59.4% | 42.5% | 42.2% | 17.5% |
496 people | 400 people | 524 people | 593 people | 620 people | 444 people | 441 people | 183 people |
The final chart I finished involved how many ships people had in their collections. Below is a text based version of the data.
A Core Set and 10 or fewer ships | 11-30 ships in total | 31-70 ships in total | 71-199 ships total | 200 or more ships in total
3% | 13.0% | 28.8% | 38.6% | 15.9%
31 people | 136 people | 301 people | 403 people | 166 people |
The types of X-Wing people played in the last 6 months was up next. The vast majority of people have only played X-Wing 2.5/AMG Edition, but a whopping 11.7% played Legacy and 11% played 2nd edition, while a confusingly large 3.4% of people played 1st edition. This question allowed people to answer ALL versions of the game they have played.
Sadly 10.9% of people did not play any X-Wing at all in the last 6 months.
Type of Gameplay | # of people | % |
X-Wing 2.5/AMG Edition (Standard | 819 people | 78.4% |
X-Wing Legacy (fan made fork of 2.0) | 122 people | 11.7% |
X-Wing Second Edition | 115 people | 11% |
X-Wing 1st Edition | 35 people | 3.4% |
Some other type of X-Wing (homebrew? Aces High? Epic?) | 206 people | 19.7% |
Have not played X-Wing in 6 months or more | 114 people | 10.9% |
Up next we have the type of X-Wing people have played THE MOST of.
Type of Gameplay | # of people | % |
X-Wing 2.5/AMG Edition (Standard) | 774 people | 74.1% |
X-Wing 2nd Edition | 80 people | 7.7% |
X-Wing 1st Edition | 21 people | 2% |
X-Wing Legacy (fan fork of 2e) | 69 people | 6.6% |
Some other type of X-Wing (homebrew? Aces High? Epic?) | 68 people | 6.5% |
Have not played in 6 months | 109 people | 10.4% |
Type of products people want | # of people | % |
More Hotshots & Aces style packs | 643 people | 62.7% |
New Battle Packs similar to the Battle of Yavin or Battle of Endor with SL cards | 433 people | 42.2% |
New Ship Releases | 821 people | 80.1% |
New Squadron Packs | 400 people | 39% |
New Starter Packs for the remaining 5 factions | 425 people | 41.5% |
Rerelease packs of Upgrades (no ships, just cards) | 254 people | 24.8% |
Reprints of unconverted 1.0 Ships (E-Wing, K-Wing, Lambda Shuttle, Upsilon Shuttle etc.) | 652 people | 63.6% |
Alternative ways to play like The Droids You Are Looking For. | 114 people | 11.1% |
Campaign systems, as hinted by the SOLO AI beta. | 304 people | 29.7% |
What is really interesting is what people want to see produced the MOST. Far and away that answer is new ships, with the 2nd placer being Reprints of unconverted 1.0 ships.
People like tiny plastic spaceships more than basically anything else it seems.
Type of new release | # of people | % |
New ship releases | 425 people | 41.9% |
Reprints of unconverted 1.0 Ships (such as the Lambda Shuttle, E-Wing, Kihraxz, Upsilon etc.) | 175 people | 17.2% |
More Hotshot & Aces Style packs with new pilots/upgrades | 129 people | 12.7% |
Campaign Systems (possibly based on the SOLO AI System?) | 80 people | 7.9% |
New Starter Packs for the remaining 5 factions | 78 people | 7.7% |

New Squadron Packs | 21 people | 2.1% |
Alternative Ways to Play (like The Droids you are looking for or Aces High) | 13 people | 1.3% |
X-Wing Miniatures Communities
The next section is all about X-Wing communities, online, in person, etc. This section discusses where people play, how they play etc.
We start out with a simple question about peoples IN PERSON X-Wing Communities. Sadly 15.4% of people have none. My own local X-Wing group has dwindled quite a bit down to less than 10 people, with only 3 within a 1 hour drive of home, but I do realize that for many the game has grown in a BIG way.
Number of people in community | # of people who answered | % |
Have NO in person community | 161 people | 15.4% |
1-3 people | 186 people | 17.8% |
4-8 people | 344 people | 33% |
9-17 people | 274 people | 26.2% |
18+ people | 79 people | 7.6% |
This next two questions dealt with where people played regularly and where they played the most at, such as game stores, their home, game stores, online, at schools etc.
Where people play | # of people | % |
At a Local Game Store | 672 people | 64.4% |
At my own home or a friend’s | 486 people | 46.6% |
Online via a computer App | 301 people | 28.8% |
At another location | 104 people | 10% |
At a College or other School | 12 people | 1.1% |
Where people play | # of people | % |
At a Local Game Store | 639 people | 61.2% |
At my own home or a friend’s | 310 people | 29.7% |
Online via a computer App | 34 people | 3.4% |
At another location | 59 people | 5.7% |
At a College or other School | None | 0% |
A few interesting things to note here are that 301 people or 28.8% of people play online, but only 3.4% of people prefer it as their favorite place to play. It seems like there is no danger of Online play taking over, people want to play with their tiny plastic spaceships in person.
Also of note is that nobody likes playing at a school the most and a whopping 61.7% of people want to be playing at their Local Game Stores. I know from talking to many many people in the community that at least some of the people who have no in person community had a community but it died when their Local Game Store closed (often during 2020 or shortly after).
Remember to support your local game stores!
People’s local group’s status on an OP kit and running a Store Championship | # of people | % of people |
Yes, and we had enough people to qualify for a Worlds Invite (16+ players) | 386 people | 37% |
Yes, but we did not have enough to qualify for a Worlds Invite | 173 people | 16.6% |
We have a kit but have not yet done a Store Championship | 70 people | 6.7% |
My Local Group has not gotten an Organized Play Kit yet. | 192 people | 18.4% |
I do not have a local Group | 223 people | 21.4% |
Rating of the kit | 1 out of 5 | 2 out of 5 | 3 out of 5 | 4 out of 5 | 5 out of 5 |
# of people | 98 people | 141 people | 427 people | 231 people | 62 people |
% of people | 10.2% | 14.7% | 44.5% | 24.1% | 6.5% |
This next question is super extra turbo spicy, letting people rate AMG’s handling of X-Wing Miniature’s so far. I glanced at the data and a large portion of people rating AMG as a “1” are also people who only play X-Wing Legacy (6.6% of people mostly play Legacy FYI), but that’s probably a pretty obvious correlation to make.
Rating of AMG’s handling of the X-Wing Miniatures Game (so far) | 1/5 | 2/5 | 3/5 | 4/5 | 5/5 |
# of people total | 261 people | 249 people | 309 people | 178 people | 47 people |
% of people | 25% | 23.9% | 29.6% | 17% | 4.5% |
This question is reeaaaally controversial, but it seems that people definitely think there is room for improvement. Subtracting the 6.6% of Legacy players makes people rating AMG a 1 only 18ish percent, or 1 in 5, which is still quite spicy. Most people seem to be in the middle of the road with that correction, which seems fair.
Remember, even if you are mad that AMG is handling the game badly, they never asked to be given X-Wing, Armada and Legion, that was a thing that Asmodee did (or their owning companies over the various buyouts). It was probably not a super smart decision to move a very popular game to a completely different company without notice, and AMG did not ask for it, so we should try to give them the benefit of patience as their game load went from only Marvel: Crisis Protocol to FIVE DIFFERENT GAMES.
Online X-Wing Play
This section mentioning online play and Legacy is why AMG banned the survey from being posted anywhere on their social media. It is important to note this is not and attack on me or my surveys, they just legally cannot acknowledge things like online play or homebrew without getting into some murky legal waters. This same situation exists with all games, but especially games that are licensed from other companies (such as… for instance, Star Wars).
These next questions discuss how much Online X-Wing play people have been taking part in.
Amount of games played | Total of people | % |
Have not played any Online X-Wing | 293 people | 28.1% |
1-5 games total since 2020 | 178 people | 17% |
6-20 games in total | 149 people | 14.3% |
20-40 games played in all | 122 people | 11.7% |
41+ games played since 2020 | 302 people | 28.9% |
This question is pretty spicy and I know a bunch of us online players had to guess, especially since tabletop.to died and took all of our tournament records with it. This question had tournaments count as a single “time” that they played.
Types of Online Play used | # of people total | % of people |
Have not played Online | 290 people | 27.8% |
Tabletop Simulator | 653 people | 62.5% |
Fly Casual | 316 people | 30.3% |
VASSAL | 165 people | 15.8% |
Other VTT or video conferencing | 6 people | 0.6% |
# of Online Tournaments participated in | Total # of people | % of people |
None | 587 people | 56.2% |
1-3 Online Events | 182 people | 17.4% |
4-10 Online Events | 151 people | 14.5% |
11+ Online Events | 124 people | 11.9% |
These last couple questions are just kinda fun random ones that keep tabs on the community as a whole, discussing what communities they take part in, if they are keeping up with the latest Star Wars shows and what other games they play.

Obi Wan Kenobi | 853 people | 81.9% |
The Book of Boba Fett | 851 people | 81.7% |
None | 70 people | 6.7% |
This one was a bit weird. with almost 7% of people not having watched anything recent in Star Wars (some of these also being people who played no X-wing either). Why are these people here? PGS is that you? There is a massive drop in viewership for all the animated stuff, which I think is disappointing. Tales of the Jedi and Visions were great short stories and The Bad Batch is a bit kiddish, but it is miles better than Resistance or Season 1 of Rebels and deserves a watch, especially later in the run.
I don’t have the time to delve in deeper than the top 19 other games, sorry, not sorry. I don’t get paid for this. The 20th place spot was literally just blank for some reason and everything after was less than 1%

The last question of the survey was if people had comments for me, the survey creator. In total I got 261 that said more than just some variation on “no comment”. Most of them were very positive and complimented the survey and/or myself, which is nice to see. A lot of people tried to give context on their answers, with many people mentioning how their local community died, or how they feel good/bad/worried about the state of the game.
Another common question or comment was what am I trying to accomplish this survey or is this official and will AMG see this? For the first question, I am just trying to gather data and share it with the community (very late though this time) and I don’t really have ulterior motivations. I like graphic design, one might say “it is my passion” and I think infographics are cool, but seeing as I am now a teacher I don’t know if I will be doing fancy infographics much going forwards.
For the second question, I have absolutely no affiliation with Atomic Mass Games whatsoever, and I have not even talked to any of their employees unless you count Twitch chat. Due to weird licensing stuff and game developer rules and boring legalese, I don’t think AMG will ever acknowledge my surveys officially, especially not this one which talks about legally questionable things like Online play via Tabletop Simulator, VASSAL, Fly Casual and the like and even things like homebrew, which companies do not legally acknowledge ever.
That being said, I am pretty sure that AMG might happen across my surveys and they might even listen to some of the info collected at some point. Were they to reach out to me at some point, I would be more than happy to share the raw survey data with them if they have any interest in it, and if they happen to have any Epic Ships that need a good home, the only one I own is a CR90.
I do these surveys out of love of the community, and I have not received a single wooden nickel for doing them (though I do have a Ko-Fi account if anyone feels generous) so far.
Sadly, my surveys are gonna slow down significantly and the quality is probably not going to be nearly as fancy as I took a job as a teacher in 2023 and… it is a lot of work. Survey data crunching is also distressingly similar to grading, so I don’t see myself doing any advanced analytics or fancy graphics unless I do surveys during the summer, and even then I am gonna be scaling back a lot. Each fully rendered survey took me 50+ hours to do including setting up the survey, getting feedback, promoting the survey all over social media, compiling data and making infographics. Even this extremely simplified survey post without infographics took me FIVE HOURS to write and compile.
So I will see you when I see you all, and I might be doing some mini-surveys here and there, but it is the end of an era.
